What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids for both men and women, typically over the age of 40. In some cases, the procedure may be recommended earlier, depending on individual needs.
This surgery aims to enhance both the form and function of the eyelids. The procedure targets excess skin and fat tissue on the upper and/or lower eyelids, restoring a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
There are two main types of blepharoplasty: upper eyelid and lower eyelid surgery. These procedures can be performed either together or separately, based on the patient’s specific needs and anatomy.
How is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Done?
Eyelid surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring the patient’s comfort during the procedure. The duration of the surgery varies, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case and whether both the upper and lower eyelids are being addressed.
For upper blepharoplasty, incisions are made along the natural creases of the eyelids, making them discreet and less visible. Excess fat and skin are carefully removed, and the incisions are then sutured.
In lower blepharoplasty, the incision is placed just below the lower eyelashes, typically 1-2 mm lower. If only fat removal is required, a transconjunctival incision (inside the eyelid) may be used, leaving no visible scar after healing.
Why Might You Consider Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
Patients seek eyelid surgery for various reasons, including:
-
Restoring skin elasticity around the eyes
-
Reducing wrinkles and fine lines
-
Altering the overall appearance and contour of the eyes
-
Achieving a more youthful, rejuvenated facial aesthetic
Recovery After Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Recovery following eyelid surgery is typically completed within 1-2 weeks. During this time, some swelling and bruising may occur, but these side effects usually subside naturally within the following days and weeks.
To ensure a smooth recovery, it’s important to avoid strenuous physical activities for the first two weeks. Sleeping with your head elevated and refraining from bending forward can also help. Here are additional post-surgery recommendations:
-
Avoid smoking, vaping, or alcohol consumption for at least 2 weeks
-
Keep the incision areas clean and dry at all times
-
Avoid exposing your face to steam or heat
-
Refrain from rubbing your eyelids
-
Skip makeup and skincare on or near the incisions
