The Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation (also known as breast enlargement or augmentation mammaplasty) is typically performed on women with smaller breasts (A or B cup). It can also be an effective solution for women who have lost breast volume due to aging, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. This procedure can create fuller, more shapely, and more symmetrical breasts.

Other reasons to consider breast augmentation include:

  • One breast is smaller or shaped differently than the other

  • Desire to improve body proportions and balance

  • Loss of breast volume after weight loss

Types of Breast Implants Available

There are two primary types of breast implants, each offering different looks and feels. Both types come in various sizes and shapes, allowing you to personalize your results further.

  • Saline Implants: These implants are made of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline (saltwater). While saline implants are less common today than silicone, they offer certain benefits, such as easier rupture detection since the implant deflates quickly when damaged.

  • Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are highly favoured for their natural appearance and feel, closely mimicking the look and texture of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants can be more difficult to detect if a rupture occurs, but modern technology reduces this risk. Many women choose silicone implants for their more lifelike results.

Other Considerations for Breast Augmentation

Choosing the right implants is just one step in preparing for breast augmentation. You’ll also decide on implant shape, size, texture, and the best placement for your body.

There are two primary options for implant placement:

  • Subglandular Placement (above the chest muscle): Best for women with enough natural breast tissue to cover the implant. This option may be preferred by those who lead active lifestyles as it doesn’t disrupt chest muscle function.

  • Submuscular Placement (below the chest muscle): Ideal for women with less breast tissue, as it provides a more natural look and feel. This option also reduces the risk of complications and is recommended for women with smaller breasts.

Dual-Plane Breast Augmentation

For those seeking a natural breast appearance, the dual-plane technique may be the best option. This method involves positioning the implant behind two layers of tissue: muscle and breast tissue. This technique offers a natural upper breast contour while ensuring the implant is securely covered.

Natural Breast Augmentation with Fat Grafting

For those seeking a more natural approach to breast enhancement, fat grafting may be an option. This technique uses liposuction to remove excess fat from another area of the body, which is then injected into the breasts to enhance volume. Fat grafting offers a less invasive option with minimal scarring, though the results may not be as dramatic as with implants. It’s also ideal for patients looking for a more subtle, organic appearance.

Do Breast Implants Last Forever?
While breast implants are designed to last many years, they are not considered lifetime devices. Most implants remain in place for 10 years or more without issues, but factors like trauma or natural changes in the breast can necessitate replacement. Routine follow-ups are recommended to ensure your implants are still in good condition, and if needed, implants can be replaced or adjusted for aesthetic reasons.

Planning Your Sydney Breast Augmentation Consultation

What to Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

We encourage you to bring your partner or a family member during the breast augmentation consultation if you feel they can help you in making a safe decision regarding your health.

Your full medical history and prior examinations will be obtained including ontological, breast feeding, and family planning.

A full breast analysis will be conducted including attention to the distance from the areola to the inframammary crease, the transverse diameter, the height of the breast, and the exact desired position of the inframammary fold.

After a comprehensive analysis, an interactive discussion between you and your surgeon, will determine whether you are suitable for a soft treatment or if you require a surgical solution.

If surgery is required, you will be given various implant shapes and sizes to try on. You are advised to take a sports bra to better envisage the end look. Accordingly, the implant size, shape, and projection will be selected, and the surgical approach will be determined. Each patient is unique, so we tailor the technique to suit the shape of your current breast, the amount of breast tissue, and overall body symmetry.

Required Measurements for Breast Augmentation Surgery

The Procedure for Breast Augmentation Surgery

A small incision of approximately four centimetres is made either around the areole (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), under the breast or in the armpit. This will depend on your anatomy and the type of implant you have chosen. Working through the incision, the surgeon lifts the breast tissue and skin to create a pocket.

The muscle is released from its lowest origin and elevated to the superior element of the breast implant pocket. Because of this release, the implant is able to rest behind the breast tissue in the lower aspect of the pocket. This allows the muscle to cover the upper breast implant and hide it from being easily seen and felt. At the same time, the dual plane breast implant position allows the implant to fill out the breast in the lower region, behind the nipple, to create a teardrop shape. Additionally, the muscle is able to massage the implant and help reduce the problematic scar contractures that need to be avoided.

The implants are then centred beneath the nipples, and the pocket and skin closed meticulously by our surgeons.

The procedure takes between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case.

The position of the incision is made in one of these locations:

What To Expect After Breast Augmentation Surgery

A compression bandage must be worn on the treated area for approximately 24 hours. This is necessary for effective healing.

Generally, you will be able to go home on the same day; however, some patients may require an overnight stay.

For the first week following surgery, you will have to wear a sports bra at all times.

For a month after this, you will need to wear one during the night.

Stitches are usually resorbable, and bruising can take up 1-3 weeks to subside.

Getting Back to Work and Normal Activities after Breast Augmentation

You will have to rest completely for the first 48 hours after surgery. It is quite normal to experience a burning sensation during this time.

It may be possible to return to work after as little as four days, as long as you do not lift any heavy objects.

Normal physical activity can be resumed after about a month.
